Mrs Tyobeka is an educationist with extensive advisory and technical experience in the management of education, policy development, policy implementation as well as monitoring and evaluation in the public sector. She has worked in Education both within and outside of government in South Africa for a total of 41 years. Thirty-two of these were in Management and Leadership positions at various levels of the education system. Throughout her educational career she attended schools with a history of producing some of South Africa’s most celebrated leaders: Lovedale College, Healdtown High School and Inanda Seminary in Durban. This sense of history and the desire to follow in the footsteps of those who had studied inthe same institutions further cemented Mrs T’s belief in the importance of education. Mrs T attended the University of Fort Hare where she majored in English and Psychology and went on to do a University Education Diploma (UED). She completed her BEd at UNISA and her Masters focusing on the Management of Educational Innovation at Reading University in the UK. Along the way she collected a number of other diplomas, certificates and short courses at various universities including the University of London in the UK, the University of Pretoria, Harvard Institute of Education and Ohio State University both in the US as well as the University of Edinburgh in Scotland

The Centre for Neurodiversity (CND) at UJ results from a collaboration between the university, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the EU. Based at the UJ Soweto Campus, the centre is involved in community engagement work within the larger Soweto area as well as in surrounding communities. The centre is one of the three centres in the country funded by the DHET and the EU as centres of excellence and national hubs, the other two being Wits – Centre for Deaf Studies, and University of Pretoria – Centre for Visual Impairment Studies. In underprivileged communities, families usually cannot afford psychological, including neuro-developmental, services. This centre is expected to meet these needs and allow easy access for teachers as a walk-in service for information, development and support.

His Royal Majesty Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, the Paramount Chief of the Abeadze Kingdom bestowed this honour at a ceremony held on November 13, 2023, at UJ’s Art Centre in South Africa. The coronation ceremony marks the beginning of a remarkable journey for Prof Mpedi. It signifies a remarkable milestone in his illustrious career and his deep-rooted connection to Ghana. The second leg of the coronation will take place during the annual Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII festival in Ghana, scheduled for August 2024. His Royal Majesty Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, also known as the Omanhen (Overlord) of the Abeadze Traditional Kingdom, will preside over this momentous event. Prof Mpedi’s coronation as a Chief in Ghana is a testament to his lifelong commitment to fostering growth and development across the African continent. “This installation is being conferred on Prof Mpedi to acknowledge his impactful contributions in the area of research, mentorship to young Ghanaian men and women who had the rare opportunity to learn and continue to learn under his tutelage, as well as progressive collaborations between institutions of higher learning in Ghana and South Africa, which has seen several Ghanaian men and women benefit from postgraduate education in law,” said His Royal Majesty Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII.

In the beginning, the two terms were defined and explained in depth by experts such as Mzamo Ntantiso from PsyCad at UJ who is both a psychologist and a traditional healer. Additionally, Sizwe Zulu who is a UJ student and Peer Educator at the Centre for Student Health and Wellness (C-SHAW) also shared his experiences with mental health challenges and his journey towards becoming a spiritual healer. Moreover, Thabiso Mathe who is a nurse, lecturer, and student counsellor at the Gauteng Nursing College shared her experiences with counselling students presenting with challenges relating to mental health and spirituality. The overall discussion took a deep dive into the different aspects of mental health, spirituality, and the experiences of mental health practitioners, traditional and spiritual healers, and the journey to mental wellness.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has unveiled its new electric vehicle (EV) buses, in what is a first for a South African university. The EV buses, which will be added to the existing fleet, have already begun ferrying students between various campuses. The buses are the latest innovation in UJ’s ongoing efforts at going green, as part of the University’s plans to reduce carbon emissions, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 defines green cities as those that are dedicated to achieving environmental, social, and economic sustainability, with a focus on minimising inputs of energy, water, and food, and drastically reducing waste, heat output, and pollution. University of Johannesburg 3D House Printing Project Launch

The DSI has identified 3D printing as a transformative technology that has the potential to revolutionise housing delivery in the country.
