Access to Basics = Luxury: Stats SA shows that in the 1990s, only 58% of households had a fridge and less than half had a car. For many kids, these basics defined “rich families.” Television & Media Influence: Owning DSTV or a colour TV was a huge childhood status symbol. Today, it’s normal, but in the ’90s only a minority had access.
