"Influential," echoed Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg, as he awarded an honorary doctorate in Philosophy to the renowned brand and marketing expert. Prof Mpedi highlighted Dr Ikalafeng's impactful work, stressing his commitment to authenticity and the promotion of Africa's unique stories. Dr. Ikalafeng champions the 'Made in Africa' initiative, advocating it as essential for Africa's self-sufficiency, unity, and prosperity. He believes that only by embracing this can Africa truly be self-reliant. His work is dedicated to challenging stereotypes and instead highlighting Africa's dynamism, creativity, and strength. Over his 30-year career, Dr. Ikalafeng has earned significant recognition in brand and marketing, including being named one of New African Magazine's '100 Most Influential Africans' and receiving the Financial Mail AdFocus Lifetime Achievement Award. A thought leader known for his advocacy of sustainable African brands, he holds degrees from Marquette University and an LLM from the University of Turin in collaboration with WIPO. Professor Mpedi praised him for embodying excellence, leadership, and service, values upheld by UJ's honorary doctorate, awarded for exceptional contributions beyond the norm.
